Welcome to Birmingham University's Bicycle Users Group, BUBUG.
We are a group of University of Birmingham cyclists who have come together to try to improve cycle facilities both within and outside the University.
The aims of the group are to work with the University (especially Hospitality and Accommodation Services and the Estates Office) and with Birmingham City Council (especially the Transport department) and with other cyclists groups (e.g. Pushbikes) to ensure better provision for cyclists on and around the University campus.
We hope to achieve:
Who are we?
The group is open to anyone at the University, especially those who cycle and who have an interest in the facilities provided on campus. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students, academic and non-academic staff are welcome to contribute their views and support.

Winter cycling road show
A cycling road show for staff and students will be held on Wednesday 17th February between 10.00 and 15.00. Activities will be in Staff House courtyard (if dry) or by the clock tower (if wet and windy).

Activities include a free of charge cycle surgery, cycle security coding and the opportunity to purchase discounted Squire D-locks (you will need to show University ID cards) and high visibility jackets and waistcoats.
Free copies of the new Birmingham City Council cycling and walking map will be available. If you are interested in taking part in the free adult cycle training on any of the days please email Caroline Radnor. [18/01/2010]
Changes to cycle parking in the red zone
Building works and repairs to the subways have required some bike stand locations to be taken out of service. See our Red Zone guide for more details. [05/01/2010]
Selly Oak Relief road - the road works are well and truly upon us.
The University seems to be surrounded by cones now! Vincent Drive is now blessed with traffic lights and single lane traffic whilst the Bristol Road is a nightmare at peak times now. Whether on two wheels or two feet you need to take extra care whilst vehicles negotiate this mayhem.
Be safe, be seen - come and get your lights and high visibility clothing at the West Midlands Police room in University Centre on a Wednesday between 12 noon and 2pm. [13/12/2009]
More showers and parking for cyclists
Your staff card now allows you to swipe into the Munrow Sports Centre. You do not need to be a member of the Munrow Sports Centre to take advantage of this.
If you cycle or run to work you can use the changing rooms, showers and park your bike in a new 40 bike space compound outside the Sports Centre. [29/07/2009].
Battery Park cycle lanes - are we impressed?
Work at Battery Park near Homebase and Sainsburys has created some far from ideal shared cycle paths! Feedback has already been made to the City Council Cycle Officer about the number of road signs in the middle of the cycle path and safety rails that take up a good third of the cycle lane. Another less welcome change here is that there is no longer a right turn permitted out of Gibbons Road towards Sainsburys. All traffic must turn left out of Gibbon's Road which means cyclists will need to exit the junction, cross two lanes of traffic and then negotiate the roundabout to get back to the shops. Grange Road gate hump removed

The dangerous rubber hump on the Grange Road bridge over the Bourn Brook has been removed (we'd like to think after some constructive feedback to Estates). Two humps have now been positioned to slow vehicles down as they leave the car park (to the right of the bridge in this photo) and on the approach to the new zebra crossing (designed to hint to the pedestrians to get onto the path and out of the road!). The last remedial action we'd like to see is the removal of the "cyclists dismount" signs on the approach to the bridge... [23/06/2008]
Not good enough - parking by the Main Library
Refurbished car park - new Sheffield bike stands - just not very accessible if someone parks a car in the adjoining bay! Read More
