Welcome to Birmingham University's Bicycle Users Group, BUBUG.
We are a group of University of Birmingham cyclists who have come together to try to improve cycle facilities both within and outside the University.
The aims of the group are to work with the University (especially Hospitality and Accommodation Services and the Estates Office) and with Birmingham City Council (especially the Transport department) and with other cyclists groups (e.g. Pushbikes) to ensure better provision for cyclists on and around the University campus.
We hope to achieve:
Who are we?
The group is open to anyone at the University, especially those who cycle and who have an interest in the facilities provided on campus. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students, academic and non-academic staff are welcome to contribute their views and support.

News:
Cycle road shows this Autumn (October and November)
The first two autumn road shows on 14th and 21st October were both blessed with dry weather and there was a high turnout at the Dr Bike stands.
The remaining dates are 11th and 18th November which are after the clocks have gone back one hour and when you will definitely need lights to get home at the end of the day! The road shows will include the FREE Dr Bike sessions as well as security coding of cycles and advice on where and how to buy a bike. Staff House courtyard is the venue if the weather is good but if wet and windy the events will be under the arches near the clock tower in the centre of the campus. The events are due to run between 10.00 and 15.00 on each of the dates.
On sale at these sessions will be Squire D-locks for £9 on production of a staff/student ID card, cycle light sets including brackets and batteries (£11 students/£15 staff) and high visibility garments (prices range from £1.50 for leg bands to £4.50 for a long sleeved top). We also have cycle bells available for sale at a mere 50 pence each.
Due to demand - whilst we can buy individual front and rear lights - we will sell a percentage of the stock separately (we have had a number of people only needing a front light or a rear light as replacements for breakages of existing kit).
For those unsure about the law, a white light is required at the front and a red light at the rear of your cycle at dusk (when the street lights come on). These lights may be fixed or flashing now. Helmets are not compulsory in the UK.
Be safe, be seen - come and get your lights and high visibility clothing. [23/10/2009]
More showers and parking for cyclists
Your staff card now allows you to swipe into the Munrow Sports Centre. You do not need to be a member of the Munrow Sports Centre to take advantage of this.
If you cycle or run to work you can use the changing rooms, showers and park your bike in a new 40 bike space compound that will be completed by the end of August 2009 [29/07/2009].
Selly Oak Relief Road getting a great deal closer!
Works are planned to redevelop the A38 close to the University from summer 2009 until completion during 2011. The University is working closely in partnership with both the company responsible for carrying out the works, Birse, and Birmingham City Council (BCC). Both Birse and BCC expected to have web pages available soon with links to plans and progress reports. As soon as these sites are available we will add links to them from these BUBUG pages. In the meantime, a plan of the overall scheme is available here.
The University will keep staff informed of developments with the works as information becomes available. An intranet page has been established which will be kept regularly updated and any staff questions can be submitted by email.
Questions asked of BIRSE at the presentation in mid-July in the Munrow Centre included whether the cycle and pedestrian access at the Bournebrook Road/Bristol Road junction (University south gate) would be maintained throughout the road works. It was confirmed that this would remain open for cyclists and pedestrians. Subsequent to that presentation, BCC has indicated that there will be no motorised access allowed to the south gate during these road works.
When the works are completed, there will be new traffic lights at the junction at Edgbaston Park Road and Bristol Road which will be improved / redeveloped. [29/07/2009]
Battery Park cycle lanes - are we impressed?
Work at Battery Park near Homebase and Sainsburys has created some far from ideal shared cycle paths! Feedback has already been made to the City Council Cycle Officer about the number of road signs in the middle of the cycle path and safety rails that take up a good third of the cycle lane. Another less welcome change here is that there is no longer a right turn permitted out of Gibbons Road towards Sainsburys. All traffic must turn left out of Gibbon's Road which means cyclists will need to exit the junction, cross two lanes of traffic and then negotiate the roundabout to get back to the shops. Grange Road gate hump removed

The dangerous rubber hump on the Grange Road bridge over the Bourn Brook has been removed (we'd like to think after some constructive feedback to Estates). Two humps have now been positioned to slow vehicles down as they leave the car park (to the right of the bridge in this photo) and on the approach to the new zebra crossing (designed to hint to the pedestrians to get onto the path and out of the road!). The last remedial action we'd like to see is the removal of the "cyclists dismount" signs on the approach to the bridge... [23/06/2008]
Muirhead Tower parking in place
