The University has entered a partnership with CycleScheme to provide cycles to staff at a reduced price. You can save on the cost of a bike as well as the associated safety and maintenance equipment.
The scheme was launched on 4th December 2006. By May 2010 over 350 employees have now bought bikes through the scheme. Full information is available on the University Human Resources web page. The scheme is currently OPEN-ENDED so (unlike the ex-Home Computer Initiative), you will be able to buy a bicycle throughout the year.
The scheme is being run in conjunction with Cyclescheme. To locate local (or not so local!) cycle shops where you can purchase your cycle, enter your postcode on the Cyclescheme "where can I get a bike?" page.
Further information on the scheme in general is available on the Cyclescheme pages and from these articles (set the links up!).
If you need cycle training to get started or to get back in the saddle - check out these options.
Remember to buy cycle lights and tools (e.g. pump, inner tubes, tyre levers, spanners, alum keys, lubricants etc) as part of your cycle purchase package. D-locks, sets of cycle lights and high visibility clothing (sleeveless and long sleeved jackets and leg bands) are available from the University Police room in University Centre (opposite the "photo me" booth and adjacent to the hairdresser) on a Wednesday between 12.00 and 14.00 weekly.
Thanks to Sally Ells and Vicky Pendleton (Personnel) and to Tim Furey (Assistant Director of Finance) for bringing the scheme to a successful launch.
