Cycling at the University of Birmingham

Travel by Bike

Help reduce congestion and travel to your destination quicker, especially if is's only a short distance (anything up to 5 miles is quite suitable for cycling).  Cycling provides an effective alternative to the private motor car and saves on petrol and parking costs.

How?
Did you know the National Cycle Route: number 5 goes very near to the University?  Or that the Worcester & Birmingham canal allows easy access right into the heart of the Edgbaston campus?

If you live a couple of miles from your workplace and usually drive, why not try cycling?

Cycle Stands
Mostly uncovered, but there are some covered racks and Sports & Exercise Science staff benefit from lockers.  Full details here.

Bike Training
If you'd like to start cycling to work but want to learn how to ride with confidence, then check out our training page.

Security Tips

  • Get insurance
  • Keep a record of your frame number
  • Get a really good lock. Subsidised D-locks are available from the University Police Room
  • Lock your bike in a place with frequent passers-by; or if you are really lucky you may find that your department will let you keep it inside!

Buying a new bike - Cyclescheme
Buy a new bike for cycling to work, free of income tax and National Insurance, in twelve interest-free monthly instalments.

More information about Salary Sacrifice cycle purchase schemes (including Boost, CycleScheme and Halfords) as well as information on what other Universities and Colleges are offering in the way of cycle purchase or hire is available in this section of our web site.

Sustainable Business Travel Allowances
The University is pleased to announce the introduction of business mileage allowance for travel by pedal cycle.  As part of the University’s Travel Plan, staff will be able to claim the following mileage rates for business related travel:

20p per mile for pedal cycles, limited to 4,000 miles per annum

More details here (included in Car Mileage Allowances!)

Shower and Changing Facilities
Estates used to publish a list of showers on their web pages.  For now we have this list which was originally supplied by University Estates and then updated by the Hospitality and Accommodation (HAS) staff (many thanks).

Defects round campus?
Spotted a pothole on campus?  Or a road side light not working?  Leaves or debris in the cycle lanes?  Let Estate Management know about it so they can fix it. Email them with the details.

Facility design
There's a selection of good and bad on campus in terms of design and provision.   Hopefully the number of items in the "bad and dreadful" sections will decline and we can increase the number of "well done" examples...
